Loudeye shuts down "P2P Polluter" Overpeer

After shedding $4 million on Overpeer in March of 2004, Loudeye shuts down Overpeer's operations effective immediately, less than 2 years following the acquisition.

Overpeer was know for its technique of polluting P2P networks with damaged sound quality files, making it difficult to download pirated tracks. More details can be found in Overpeer's patent application.

Digital media rights owners keep looking for a better way of protecting their interests in P2P domain.

Fallout of Sony's XCP copy protection technology

Experts: Sony plan widens security hole
The fallout from a hidden copy-protection program that Sony BMG Music Entertainment put on some CDs is only getting worse. Sony's suggested method for removing the program actually widens the security hole the original software created, researchers say.

Sony apparently has moved to recall the discs in question, but music fans who have listened to them on their computers or tried to remove the dangerous software they deposited could still be vulnerable. read full story / BusinessWeek online
